WARNING To Potential Customers NOVEMBER 16TH, 2009 / NO COMMENTS » / BY KINGOFTEHINTERNETS Contents ___________________________________________________________________________________ Known Issues Installation Problems Game Stability Issues General Issues General limitations Multiplayer Issues What you need to know about multiplayer Conclusion Final words ____________________________________________________________________________________ [Known Issues] Here are some of the problems with the game you may encounter if you decide to purchase it: [A] Installation Problems: 1.) The game comes in two DVDs. Many PC systems will not recognize the content on the second one. 2.) You might end up with a game from a batch where the first DVD simply does not read. 3.) You will have to register at Steam and download the release patch and any other missing files the download can easily be a multi-hour hassle. 4.) Steam may sometimes not work correctly, it might refuse to install from the disc and download the entire installer from the Steam database. This will be very unfair for those who reside in countries with lower Internet speeds or those with limited bandwidth usage. 5.) Generally installing is anything but “easy and casual”. Troubleshooting can require hours of research and re-installs. http://www.infinityward.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=167658 ______________________________________________________________________________________ [B] Game Stability Issues: 6.) You may not be able to get beyond the first screen at all (freeze). 7.) Missing or unreadable text on starting screen and in in-game HUD. 8.) During single player game play, the game is likely to inform you that you are missing a variety of different important game files and you can’t continue the campaign unless you fix the problem. But they don’t tell you how. 9.) Game might crash at any time during single-player or multi-player play (”iw4mp.exe has stopped working”, “Direct X has encountered an error”, random freezes, etc.) for no apparent reason. 10.) You may encounter nonstop screen flashing or screen flickering which you might not be able to resolve. http://www.infinityward.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=167468 11.) Some performance drops when running in AMD Crossfire http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=227&threadid=121969 ______________________________________________________________________________________ [General Issues] Here are some of the more general things you will encounter if you do decide to purchase this game. [C] General Limitations: 12.) You are required to log in to Steam to play. 13.) So far, there has been no customer support or tech support that helped solved any problems. Future customer support is thus, very unlikely. 14.) The game does not support NVIDIA SLI (two graphics cards). 15.) There is no command console. Don’t trust pictures on the Internet saying there is because there isn’t. 16.) You cannot change the FoV to a higher value without modifying the cfg file. The current FoV is set at 65 degrees which is highly uncomfortable for viewing at a close distance. As a result, many players suffer from motion sickness while/after playing this game. 17.) You may not be able to change your in-game resolution and might be stuck with a resolution like 1024x768. 18.) Leaning, an essential function in COD4 has been taken out in favor of simplifying the game. 19.) You can only play the game with one profile (your Steam profile), family members are either stuck using your profile, or they buy their own game. ______________________________________________________________________________________ [Multi-player Issues] Here are some issues that are more towards the multi-player side of the game. [D] What You Need To Know About Multi-player. 20.) [Erased] 21.) Your internet router is likely to prevent you from logging in to the online part of the game at all. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1022206 http://www.infinityward.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=175254 22.) The game doesn’t support dedicated servers. This means you can’t have favorite servers where you get to know people and can instantly play the game in your preferred mode and with a preferred social atmosphere. For those who don’t understand, this simply means no server browser. http://www.infinityward.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=128182 23.) Instead, the game utilizes IWNet matchmaking system. Players are automatically thrown into random servers, fighting against people they don’t know. 24.) The game runs on listen servers or p2p technology. The game is hosted by one of the players in the match chosen by IWNet. Due to home connections being very low in bandwidth, players will most often experience high pings in-game. 25.) Online play will also be completely reliant on the number of people playing at any given time. If no one is playing in your area/nation, IWNet will put you in a foreign room regardless of the ping level. 26.) The hosting player will also have a 0-ping advantage, their shots are registered faster, etc. 27.) Meanwhile, you can’t see your own precise ping but only a “ping-bar” that is very misleading. However, a fellow community member managed to increase the number of bars to get a more accurate representation of the ping. http://www.infinityward.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=167264 (Thanks SarahB for the ping guide) 28.) All but one match type is capped at 6 vs 6 players. (Ground War is 9 v 9; Mixed match type) 29.) You are thrown into random maps, and rounds will typically only last around 5 minutes. Then there is a 1-2 minute wait before a new round is loaded. 30.) Frequent pauses during game play for host-migration, if the game fails to migrate the match ends there 31.) It is very difficult to get into public games with your friends. (The friends/party system is buggy) 32.) Hardcore is limited to only two game-modes, and they are not unlocked before you reach a certain level. 33.) There are no mod tools, so there will be zero user-made maps or game-modes. There will be no competitive gaming or realism mods. 34.) You cannot /record (No command console) 35.) Kill streak bonuses are hugely overpowered. 36.) All games will be un-admined, meaning no one can kick players from the auto-generated matches. This means that cheaters/hackers have a free reign. The anti-cheat system VAC is slow acting and cheaters might be able to develop hacks that are undetectable to VAC. No admins mean that the game is completely reliant on software to deal with the cheaters/hackers.

As it is, the game will most likely be almost completely deserted in a few weeks time. Since you can only get even remotely acceptable connection speeds if there is a huge player-base, this is a self-reinforcing effect after the first hype is over. On a more general note, you are warned against purchasing Modern Warfare 2 since it is important to send a message to the gaming industry with the only thing that counts, your wallet. Infinity Ward should be punished for: 1) Repeatedly lying about the PC version (”online same as it ever was”, “not a console port”, etc. etc.). 2) Completely abandoning the PC community that has helped them get to where they are now. 3) Insulting the PC community while doing so. Smugness and disrespect should not be rewarded. The customer is always right. The right thing to do here is not buying the game.
I have the game, it really good. Only problem is no dedicated servers for multiplayer. If it had that it might be the next Battlefield 2. I heard that COD 4 Modern Warefare 2 won't have dedicated servers either.
Yup, it looked promising, unfortunately they screwed MP again.

seems like a no-go on both flash point and modern warfare 2, which really sucks since they both look good.

Hey yall, been awhile!
Just letting you know that I have been playing BF2 just about every night lately. I was unable to install Project Reality due to some conflict with Microsoft Framework or something, tried everything but to no avail.
It is still fun though, so if anyone is interested in firing it back up, i will be there!
